PREMIUM CASE WINE DESCRIPTION - AUGUST 2026
Abbazia di Novacella – Pinot Nero Riserva “Oberhof” Alto Adige DOC 2020
James Suckling 92

Grape: 100% Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir)
The wine and its origin: Considered one of the world’s noblest and most challenging grape varieties, Pinot Nero reaches its highest expression only in exceptional vineyards. The Oberhof Riserva comes from one of Alto Adige’s most distinctive sites, where Alpine freshness, dramatic day-night temperature shifts, and ancient mineral-rich soils create the perfect conditions for wines of elegance, precision, and extraordinary longevity.
Produced only in exceptional vintages, with an annual production of just 3,000 bottles, the Oberhof Riserva is one of Abbazia di Novacella’s rarest wines. This is the first time we have received an allocation, of only 30 bottles.
Located in the Valle Isarco (Eisacktal), one of Italy’s northernmost wine regions, Abbazia di Novacella’s vineyards benefit from a unique combination of high-altitude sunshine, cool mountain air, and significant diurnal temperature variation. These conditions allow the grapes to ripen slowly while preserving freshness, aromatic complexity, and refined structure.

The winery:

Founded in 1142 by the Augustinian Canons, Abbazia di Novacella is one of the oldest active monasteries and wineries in the world. For nearly nine centuries, the monks have cultivated vines, preserving an extraordinary winemaking heritage while continuously refining their approach to reflect the unique Alpine environment.
Today, the estate is recognized as one of Alto Adige’s benchmark producers, particularly renowned for its elegant white wines from the Valle Isarco, as well as its exceptional interpretations of Pinot Nero. The combination of monastic tradition, meticulous vineyard work, and a remarkable terroir results in wines that express both history and a strong sense of place.

Vineyard: The historic Oberhof vineyard sits in a privileged Alpine setting, where cool breezes from the surrounding mountains and mineral-rich soils provide ideal conditions for Pinot Nero. The vineyard’s natural balance produces grapes with exceptional concentration while maintaining the finesse, freshness, and elegance that define great Alpine Pinot Noir.
Tasting Notes: A brilliant ruby red colour introduces a sophisticated bouquet of wild strawberry, ripe red cherry, rose petals, violet, forest floor, sweet spices, and delicate smoky notes. On the palate, the wine is silky and refined, with beautifully integrated tannins, vibrant acidity, and remarkable depth. The finish is exceptionally long and layered, revealing new nuances as the wine evolves in the glass.
Vinification & Ageing: Only the finest grapes are selected for this Riserva. Following careful fermentation, the wine matures in French oak barrels, where time allows it to develop greater complexity, structure, and harmony while preserving the purity and elegance of the Pinot Nero fruit.
Ageing Potential: 12–20 years, with the ability to gain further complexity through bottle ageing.
Food Pairing: A refined companion for duck breast, roast veal, venison, porcini mushrooms, truffle-based dishes, and sophisticated Alpine cuisine. Its elegance also makes it a beautiful match for aged cheeses and delicate preparations featuring earthy flavours.
Fun Fact: With roots dating back to 1142, Abbazia di Novacella has witnessed almost nine centuries of European history. Its Pinot Nero Riserva “Oberhof” represents the meeting point between ancient winemaking tradition and one of Italy’s most extraordinary mountain terroirs, a true expression of Alto Adige’s elegance, precision, and sense of place.

Fun Fact: Doladira was founded by Meredith Erickson, a celebrated Canadian food writer and the author of La Cucina di Terroni.

Meredith collaborated closely with Cosimo on the creation of the book, and through that process we came to know her thoughtful approach to storytelling and her deep appreciation for authentic Italian culture, food, and hospitality. Her vision for Doladira reflects that same philosophy: an aperitivo inspired by the Italian Alps, rooted in tradition yet refreshingly contemporary.
The story behind the bottle: The Doladira bottle was designed to reflect the silhouette of a mountain, while its distinctive colour draws inspiration from the Enrosadira, the pink glow that lights up the Dolomites at sunset.
