Etna: The Volcano the Wine World Loves

Image: Etna, Sicily

We wine lovers, collectors, and sommeliers can’t get enough of Etna, and it’s easy to see why. Etna isn’t just a mountain, it’s alive. Every eruption, lava flow, and layer of ash shapes the soils, and each vineyard tells its own story. That’s why these wines have something you can feel in every sip: energy, minerality, and precision.

Altitude That Changes Everything

Vines climb over 1,000 metres, where hot days and cool nights slow ripening, producing wines that are fresh, elegant, and vibrant. The steep, rocky slopes must be worked entirely by hand, making these wines rare and unique.

Etna’s Signature Grapes

Nerello Mascalese is the grape behind Etna Rosso, an elegant red with notes of red berries and spice, perfect with arancini, parmigiana, game, roast meats, or richer fish.

Carricante is the backbone of Etna Bianco, offering bright, mineral-driven whites ideal with seafood, creamy pasta, or light poultry.

Both grapes also have excellent ageing potential.

Our Producers

Maugeri

An Etnean family’s wine project set on a 7-hectare volcanic amphitheatre framed by more than 2.8 km of lava dry-stone walls.

New to our portfolio:

Etna Bianco Superiore DOC Contrada Volpare

An expressive Etna Bianco Superiore made from Carricante grapes grown in the mineral-rich volcanic soils of Contrada Volpare on Mount Etna’s eastern slope. It opens with aromas of citrus, white flowers, Mediterranean herbs, and a refined smoky minerality.

The palate is vibrant and saline, with crisp acidity and a long, elegant finish marked by its volcanic character. A precise, distinctive wine that captures the authentic soul of Etna.

Etna Bianco Superiore DOC Contrada Volpare “Frontebosco”

A refined Etna Bianco Superiore crafted from Carricante grown in the volcanic soils of Contrada Volpare on the eastern slope of Mount Etna. It offers bright notes of citrus, white flowers, and Mediterranean herbs, lifted by a delicate smoky minerality.

On the palate it is vibrant and saline, with crisp acidity and a long, clean, volcanic-driven finish. A precise and elegant expression of Etna’s unique terroir.

Passopisciaro

A benchmark for Nerello Mascalese, expressing the grape’s nuances through single-vineyard (Contrade) across varied soils and elevations.

Deeply rooted in local tradition, crafting wines that honour the land and the character of each vintage in a territory shaped by millennia of viticulture.

Biondi

One of Etna’s most historic estates, celebrated for heritage-driven winemaking, precision, and unmistakable regional identity.

Ayunta

A small, environmentally respectful estate producing balanced, traditional wines, some from vines over 150 years old.

Selected by our team for their purity and character, these volcanic wines are rare, hand-crafted, and produced in tiny quantities under extreme conditions. Harvesting on Mount Etna is exceptionally demanding: growers work on steep, uneven terraces carved into ancient lava flows, where loose volcanic soils offer little stability and require everything to be done by hand. Sudden temperature drops, swirling winds, and rapid weather changes add further difficulty, making each harvest a true test of resilience. These are wines born from effort, precision, and the unforgiving nature of the volcano.

The Art of Appassimento Method

The Appassimento Method is a traditional Valpolicella technique where grapes are slowly “withered” to concentrate flavour, a patient process perfected over centuries to create Amarone.
