Uniquely Suited for Sangiovese
Pagliarese is located in Castelnuovo Berardenga, the Southernmost town in Chianti Classico. This region, known for its rolling hills and unique landscape, is affectionately called “The Butterfly of the Grand Duchy.” It features a captivating mix of vineyards, woods and olive groves. Pagliarese’s cellars, located within their Sant’Emilia farmhouse, have always been the heart of the estate's winemaking. They continue to age wines the way they always have in the past, preserving the traditional methods throughout time.
The exceptional quality of its wines is due to several key factors. The diverse soils, ranging from limestone-rich to sandy and silty, combined with a continental climate and significant elevation changes, create the perfect environment for Sangiovese. This unique blend of soil and climate imparts a distinctive character and complexity to the wines, making Pagliarese a standout in Italy’s winemaking scene.

A wine revival
The Pagliaresi family's winemaking legacy dates back to the 1200s in Siena, where they played a key role in local politics and academia. Moving to the countryside of Berardenga, they established a prominent winery that flourished from the 1970s to the mid-1980s, thanks to the expertise of Giulio Gambelli, a master of Sangiovese. After a period of closure, the Poggiali family acquired the estate in 1995 and revitalized it, focusing on preserving and replanting ancient vineyards. By 2015, Pagliarese re-emerged, blending tradition with modern techniques. Today, Pagliarese wines embody the region’s rich history and terroir, showcasing the elegance of Sangiovese, all crafted with respect for Chianti Classico’s historic qualities.
